Cat Power, Wanderer
Chan Marshall goes in a new direction every time she releases an album. Wanderer strips away all the pop production of 2012’s Sun, building her songs on sly, enchanting rhythms and the power of her voice. These are bluesy, soulful numbers, often loose and bouncy, but unhurried and sophisticated. While she covers Rihanna, and duets marvelously with Lana Del Ray; these are the album's only traces of pop-ish-ness. Marshall’s lyrics here are as personal as ever, and that’s another cool thing about an artist with a fascinating life who only releases an album every six years or so — she’s always been through a lot since the last one, and she shares it readily with her listeners. Highlights: “You Get,” “Horizon,” “Black”
