Old Crow Medicine Show, Volunteer
It’s easy enough to call Old Crow Medicine Show “alt-country” because of their cultural background and approach: these are punk-inspired Xennials who met and began performing in NYC. But the music itself isn’t hybridized, whether with alternative rock or even blues rock. It’s full-on old-timey Appalachian, bluegrass-centered mountain music, and if this band plays that music maybe a little more faster and frenzied at times than their forebears did, they do commit to their idiom faithfully. The new album feels particularly reverent, as they revel in the traditions theyhas always clothed themselves in. The OCMS may not’ve been bred in the country, but it lives there comfortably. Highlights: “Flicker & Shine,” “Old Hickory,” “Shout Mountain Music”
