King Tuff, The Other
After reveling in this album for a few listens, it surprised me to learn that the philosophical, spiritual bent Kyle Thomas displays on his fourth solo LP is a new direction, because he’s such a natural. Whatever soulsearching and awakening Thomas has been through since his last album, he’s integrated it into his music masterfully. The Other is a well-rounded rock-and-roll record — driven by guitars but peppered with horns, synths and Ty Segall’s drums — and Thomas has all the required swagger and subtlety to ensure that the mystical truths embedded in each song land easily and gracefully. Highlights: “The Other,” “Ultraviolet,” “Neverending Sunshine”
