Joan As Police Woman, Damned Devotion
Not a concept album but nevertheless an album very much wrapped around a concept — devotion itself — Joan Wasser’s new album is understated, sophisticated and smooth. Wasser’s self-described “punk-rock R&B” is polished, elegant and refined here, even when when toying around with jagged rhythms, and even when she’s singing about being out of her depth. There’s a soft, patient confidence to the whole thing, and it’s an incredibly strong set of songs. Highlights: “Warning Bell,” “Tell Me,” “Rely On”
