Harry James Angus, Struggle With Glory
The genre-bending Cat Empire’s exceptionally talented trumpeter and sometime singer plants his third solo effort firmly within an intersection between jazz and gospel that suits him beautifully. Always the weirder and more fascinating of the Melbourne band’s two primary songwriters, Angus uses this Greek mythology-inspired concept album to explore lyrically darker territory than usual. Curiously, the music itself is as sweet and festive as anything. He’s reined himself in, with songs that are simpler and vocals that are far less acrobatic than what he’s capable of, but the record is more cohesive for it. Highlights: “I Saw Red,” “Kill The Priest,” “Struggle With Glory”
