The Decemberists, I’ll Be Your Girl
The Portland band offers meditations, ruminations and lamentations on violence and depression that face the tumult of the times, at times grimly and others gaily. They flirt with synths on this one, but this band has never been about sonic feats; they rely on songwriting, on the band’s near perfect synergy, and on their boldly classical, literate lyricism. The synths neither greatly help nor hinder the album and fall away after the first 3 tracks anyway, but the band is in top form all the way through. Highlights: “Tripping Along,” “Everything Is Awful,” “Rusalka Rusalka / Wild Rushes”
