David Byrne, American Utopia
It’s a sure bet David Byrne’s music will never cease to be informed by new fascinations. He’s at his best when showing off his latest discoveries, and while this is the first official Byrne solo album in 13 years, it features a host of collaborators anyway, so there’s plenty of new stuff in the mix. His home base is still somewhere between world-music-influenced pop/rock and Latin jazz, but here he incorprates electronic sounds that were unavailable in his youth, too. A few songs tease at what the Talking Heads might’ve sounded like if they emerged in the 2010s, and it sounds delicious. Highlights: “It’s Not Dark Up Here,” “I Dance Like This,” “Everybody’s Coming To My House”
