Christine and the Queens, Chris
The bilingual French pop outfit follows up a fantastic debut with an even stronger successor that pops and sizzles with dynamic melodies. “Chris” indicates the newly iterated stage name and chosen identify of singer Héloïse Letissier, a pansexual and gender non-conforming artist whose explorations of identity are constant. The album’s been released with an English edition, which still has a fair bit of French on it, and a French edition with some English in the mix too. Chris’s English is accented enough, and her lyrical voice is strong enough that it’s definitely worth looking at the lyric sheet for a deeper appreciation of her content, though the melodies are robust enough they’d be enjoyable without understanding anything (non-French speakers can try the French version to test this). Highlights: “Doesn’t Matter,” “Feel Good,” “The Walker”
