Cardi B, Invasion of Privacy
Pulling off the over-the-top swagger of mainstream rap without sounding narcissistic requires a sharp sense of humor, and Cardi B is up to the task. While she embraces certain modern rap tropes that would usually keep me away— fixating on money and fame, self-obsession, violent imagery— Cardi personalizes it enough to keep it interesting, framing it all in the context of her rags-to-riches journey. Having achieved superstardom in the world of Top 40 pop culture so quickly that even I had heard of her before she’d released her first proper album, there’s a legitimacy to the “living large” shtick, particularly when grounded in the vulnerability and overwhelm of attaining super-stardom so quickly. Highlights: “Drip,” “Bodak Yellow,” “I Do”
