August Greene, August Greene
Quintessential conscious rapper Common joins forces again with jazz pianist Robert Glasper and drummer/producer Karriem Riggins for their first full-length album. So it’s a inter-genre supergroup in that sense, but it still comes across as very much a rap album — albeit one with refreshingly loose, gracefully meandering beats. Common’s lyrics are hyper-present throughout, barring the excellent 10-minute jazz suite that closes the album. These guys are seasoned and skilled collaborators and it’s the strongest rap album I’ve heard this year. Highlights: “Practice,” “No Apologies,” “Black Kennedy”
